Fuel pressure is critical for good engine performance.
EFI and MPI fuel injected engines must have the exact fuel pressure specified in the Service Manual
or the engine will not run correctly.
Fuel pumps can get "gummed up" or "varnished" after sitting for 6 to 8 months.
Electric fuel pumps might have to be replaced if gummed up. Cleaning does not usually help.
Some engine have two fuel pumps, a primary mechanical "lift" pump and an electric pump.
Marine rated mechanical pumps usually have a port to which a clear or grean tube attaches to.
This clear or green tube catches the overflow fuel in the event of a pump diaphram failure.
Any fuel in the tube means the pump is bad and it must be replaced.
Mechanical fuel pumps should not tap or make noise.
If you hear a tapping noise from your mechanical pump, it is time to have it replaced.
